Polyphenols are naturally occurring compounds that are widely distributed in plant-based foods which are rich in antioxidant properties. The antioxidant properties of polyphenols help protect cells from the damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals can be formed naturally in the body as well as formed by exposure to environmental toxins such as air pollution, ultra-violet light, cigarette smoke, and radiation. Their unstable, highly reactive structure can cause damage to molecules in the body, including proteins, lipids, cells, and DNA. Free radicals can cause a process called oxidative stress with can lead to cell damage and contribute to a variety of diseases. Polyphenols can help neutralize free radicals and reduce the amount of oxidative stress caused by free radical damage.
Inhibition of Carbohydrate Uptake
Polyphenol-rich sugarcane extract may help deter glucose and fructose uptake in intestinal cells and restore insulin production in dysfunctional β-cells. Deferring the glucose and fructose update is a key function in controlling blood sugar levels. Polynol’s also contain naturally high concentrations of certain antioxidants which have been shown to support insulin control. Endogenous Antioxidant Defense
Polynol can up-regulate the body’s production of endogenous antioxidants like glutathione and superoxide dismutase. Polynol can activate the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NrF2) pathway, which is responsible for producing these endogenous antioxidants. Polynol demonstrated in studies to be a potent Nrf2 activator that induced up to 50-fold of Nrf2 activation.

The mechanism involved with premature aging in skin is matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), an enzyme that breaks down collagen and is activated by exposure to the ultraviolet (UV) light that partially makes up the spectrum of sunlight. Pre clinical data found that Polynol can dose-dependently inhibit the expression of MMP-1 in skin cells exposed to UV light, suggesting that is could have photo-protective effects.
Glutathione is known as the master oxidant because of its ability to regenerate other antioxidants within the body such as vitamin C and E. Glutathione is produced naturally in the body but as we age levels of glutathione start to decrease. Glutathione has been studied for its multitude of skin benefits, including supporting healthy skin appearance and UV skin protection.
